Experts Debate The Best Diet For Menopause

Studies show one thing, doctors say another—it is difficult to tell what the best kind of diet for menopause is as a result of the conflicting information coming form different sources. Over the years, the guidelines and recommendations for eating during menopause have changed. Experts have come up with what they consider the “best” menopause diet over and over again. However, a few guidelines have remained consistent throughout years of research, and it is this information that can lead you to a pain-free menopause—and even stick with you as a post menopause diet as well!

The Change—For The Better

You do not need to necessarily follow the best menopause diet in order to stay healthy during this drastic life change. Simply following a few nutritious guidelines will help to make your menopause experience happier and healthier. Even focusing on one or two tips is a step in the right direction.

First, women going through menopause should increase their daily fruit intake, especially those that are high in potassium. Fruits that are high in potassium help to manage sodium and water etention. Second, eat more vegetables as well. Dark, leafy greens are especially prefered. Increasing your consumption of fruits and vegetables may seem like something you would do on any diet—and it is just as effective for women going through menopause.

One of the best foods to incorporate into your menopause diet is soy foods. Beans and lentils are also key foods to eat more of. Additionally, you might try adding seaweed, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and more fiber.

For the best results from a menopause diet, you have to reduce your intake of certain foods as well. Fried foods are off limits; try baking or broiling things instead. White rice and white bread are off limits as well; long grain rice and whole wheat bread are better bets. Eat fewer regular potatoes, and limit your intake of alcohol and caffiene. Also replace processed cooking oils with non-processed cookign oils such as extra virgin olive oil and canola oil.

Not One Right Answer

It is tempting to seek one course of action to follow when attempting to ease the symtpoms of menopause. However, all of the mind-changing and contradictory research over the years has only proven one thing: the experts have not yet agreed on the one menopause diet that is the “best.” Yet, certain things from all menopause diets hold true, and it is these tips that will serve you well throughout your menopause years.
