Hormones work by carrying messages from glands to cells in order to maintain chemical levels in the bloodstream that achieve homeostasis. There are two types of hormones known as steroids and peptides, and in general, steroids are sex hormones which are related to sexual maturity and fertility.
Hormones so perfectly and efficiently manage homoeostasis due to the negative feedback cycles, and the goal here is to keep the concentration of a certain chemical, such as testosterone, at a constant level for a certain period of time.
There are quite a few different hormones in the female and male bodies, and even some that are shared. If you want to learn more you can speak to your doctor who will be able to advise you on what they are and what they do to your body.
Estradiol
There are quite a few different hormones in the female body that you are going to want to be aware of, but one of the most important is known as estradiol hormone. Known as being a female estrogen sex hormone, estradiol hormone is also present in males, and it represents the major estrogen in humans.
The estradiol hormone in women is produced by the granulose cells of the ovaries by the aromatization of androstenedione to estrone, followed by converstion of estrone to estradiol. Estradiol is not only produced in the glands, but as well it is produced in the brain and in arterial walls.
The measurement of estradiol hormone is very important, and serum estradiol measurement in women reflects primarily the activity of the ovaries. During pregnancy the levels tend to rise, and doctors will usually stay abreast of this and ensure that the levels are normal.
Female Reproduction
The estradiol hormone plays a major role in female reproduction. It acts as a growth hormone of the tissue of the reproductive organs, supporting the lining of the vagina, the cervical glands, the endometrium and the lining of the fallopian tubes.
Women who do not have enough of this hormone are often unable to conceive, because their womb is simply not set up and strong enough for it.
You should get your estradiol levels checked on a regular basis if you are a woman, especially if you are over the age of thirty. This way your doctor will be able to keep an eye on all your hormone levels and ensure that they are normal. If not, your doctor will most likely make you start taking a supplement which will level them out.
