Our hormones actually kick in when we are just small children, but they really get going as we near our teens. We all have hormones, however depending on whether you are a man or woman you will have different hormones.

The most important hormones made by the ovaries in the female body are known as female sex hormones, the two main ones being oestrogen and progesterone.

Did you know that testosterone is not just a man’s hormone, but in fact a female hormone as well? Are you interested in learning about testosterone as the female hormone? If so, here is some information that you will find very helpful.

How it Works

As women get older, menopause becomes inevitable, and estrogen, which is known as being the most major female hormone or estradiol hormone, falls and then eventually becomes absent altogether. However there is also another female hormone that drops as well, and that is testosterone.

Men do have testosterone and that is where we hear about it most, but women actually have this hormone as well. Men have so much more of it than women do however, which is why it is often mistakenly called the male hormone.

What is Testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone that is made by the body and which helps, in a man, to maintain sex drive and sexual function, muscle mass and strength, mood and energy levels, bone strength, and more. As a female hormone, what it mostly does is maintain the sex drive.

Testosterone is also well known for its role in the hormonal hotbed that is puberty, and as women age, the levels of circulating testosterone will gradually decline as they near menopause. There are certain symptoms that a woman may notice once there is a loss of testosterone, and this includes a loss of vital energy, loss of familiar levels of sexual libido, sensitivity of nipples and genitals, dry skin, brittle scalp hair, and more.

Because of these serious side effects, it is important that you get your testosterone levels checked regularly, regardless of whether you are a man or woman. You can do this easily when you go in to your doctor for a checkup, and this will make a phenomenal difference if you find that your levels have in fact dropped and this way you will be able to do something about it as soon as possible and therefore be less likely to suffer any major problems.
