What Are the Complications Caused by Estrogen Deficiency?
The hormone that plays the most important role in a woman’s life is without a doubt estrogen and an Estrogen deficiency can cause numerous amounts of unpleasant symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, foggy thinking, depression, heart palpitations, bone loss, headaches, dry skin and hair, wrinkles and incontinence.
Although estrogen deficiency is more commonly associated with estrogen menopause there are other conditions that can be triggered or fueled by the lack of this hormone.
But we will first look at estrogen deficiency and the menopause. The most common signs and symptoms here are the hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. These complaints can actually begin several years before the menopause and last for some years after. Statistics have shown that approximately 70% of American women will face some of these symptoms.
It is also believed that cardiovascular disease, the most common cause of death amongst women in America, is linked to estrogen deficiency. The reason behind this is the connection that cardiovascular disease is not common before menopause but the number rises after menopause leading to the conclusion that estrogen plays a role in the delayed onset of cardiovascular disease in women.
Osteoporosis is yet another condition that can be aggravated by an estrogen deficiency. There is established evidence that after menopause women can have an acceleration of bone loss and osteporotic bone fractures. Although it is best to begin estrogen replacement early on in the menopause to counteract the bone loss caused by an estrogen deficiency it is also thought that taking estrogen even after 10 years will help in preserving the bones. Some large clinical trials have concluded that women in their sixties showed a decrease of osteoporosis and fractures when taking estrogen.
We need to look at arteriosclerosis in women and why it appears usually after they have gone through menopause their estrogen levels have decreased. Estrogens are important to the vascular elasticity and the reduction in cholesterol levels.
Also not to be taken lightly is the effect that estrogen has on keeping sexual organs firm, which leads to a urinary tract that functions better, and also a youthful looking skin.
Other studies have shown that a good estrogen level decreases the risk of colorectal cancer, type 2 diabetes, it delays the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease from worsening, improves the balance and helps women who suffer from insomnia.
As can be seen an estrogen deficiency can cause all sorts of problems and can aggravate conditions that you may already have.
